Latest News on Mergers
On Thursday 3rd March 2016, the State Government announced a new proposal, for the merger of Cootamundra, Gundagai and Harden Shire Councils. This proposal was made by Harden Shire Council to the Minister for Local Government, who was obliged to proceed with the public enquiry process, in accordance with the Local Government Act.
Cootamundra Council is now involved in 2 merger proposals, with the first being announced on Friday 18 December by Premier Mike Baird and Minister Paul Toole.
The Premier appointed a delegate, Mr John Turner, who is required to review all relevant information and prepare a report for each of the two proposals. These reports will be provided to the Boundaries Commission, and ultimately to the Minister, for a final decision.
The State Government has been working through a process with the NSW Boundaries Commission, and this process began on the 6th January. A public inquiry was held to the Cootamundra & Gundagai proposal, with submissions closing on 28 February 2016.
Submissions are now open, until 5.00pm on Friday 15th April, for the new proposal of Cootamundra, Gundagai and Harden. Submissions can be made through the website, or can be posted to GPO Box 5341, Sydney, NSW 2001. A public inquiry for this proposal was held on Tuesday 5th April 2016.
An announcement has been made that the timeframe for Cootamundra Local Government Elelct5ion is March 2017.
Council will provide updates to the community as information comes to hand.
